There is positive progress in bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India. India is planning to fully open all types of visa services for Bangladeshi citizens very soon, according to a report in the Indian media The Indian Express.
According to the report, Bangladesh has already introduced visas for all categories of Indian citizens in February this year. In view of this, India is also going to take the same step, through which visa operations between the two countries have started returning to normal.
Foreign Affairs Advisor Khalilur Rahman raised the issue during a recent visit to Dhaka. He said that while Bangladesh has made visas easier for Indians, a similar initiative is expected from India.
Currently, Bangladesh consular operations are operational in New Delhi, Kolkata, Agartala, Mumbai and Chennai. Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah said that while some visa services were temporarily suspended in December last year, they were resumed in February.
The report also mentioned that after the political changes in 2024, there was some tension between the two countries. However, initiatives were taken to improve relations earlier this year. Although visa services were somewhat restricted for security reasons, they were not completely closed. Medical and family visas were open for urgent needs.
Preparations are now underway to gradually introduce full visa services. There is also a possibility of high-level meetings between the two countries in the next few weeks.
According to the Bangladesh High Commission, nearly 12,000 visas have been issued to Indian citizens in the last two months since the resumption of visa services. This includes tourist, business, medical and family travel visas.
